Tracy Byrd And Mark Chesnutt Record Long-Awaited Duet

(3/7/01, 5 p.m. ET) - Tracy Byrd and Mark Chesnutt recently teamed up to record their first duet, "That's A Good Way," for Byrd's forthcoming album on RCA Records. The long-time friends and Beaumont, Texas natives have been talking about a duet for years, but the timing never seemed to be right for one or the other's career, as Byrd and Chesnutt tell LAUNCH.
"Well, we both had thriving solo careers going," says Byrd.
Adds Chesnutt, "We were once big superstars on our own, you know?"
"When everything went south we figured we better team up," Byrd says.
Chesnutt continues, "We've been talking about it for years. We've done a lot of shows together and as far back as I can remember, radio would always ask when are we gonna do something together, and so we always knew it would happen. We just didn't know when."
Recording the duet became a priority once both Byrd and Chesnutt parted ways with MCA Nashville. Chesnutt, who is currently unsigned, was free to do what he wanted and Byrd was gearing up for his second album on RCA when "That's A Good Way" fell into Byrd's lap.
Byrd says, "I thought it would take a long time to find a song. When we decided and we said, 'Yeah, let's do it. It's time to do the duet,' cause we'd talked about it for years, the timing was just perfect. I figured we were gonna have a hard time finding a song that we both really loved and that we both would agree to do, but when I heard it I said, 'That's a perfect duet. We just change a little word here, a word there and it'll be a perfect duet.' I sent it to Mark. He got it at 10. At 10:05 my phone rang and he said, 'Let's go to Nashville and cut a record.'"
Byrd and Chesnutt plan to perform a series of concert dates together and are considering the possibility of a duet album. "That's A Good Way" will be released on March 19, while Byrd's new album is due out early this summer.
