Brian McKnight Claims Davis & Wonder As Inspirations
03/07/2001 10:00 AM, Yahoo! Music
(3/7/01, 10 a.m. ET) - Singer Brian McKnight was one of the celebrities in attendance at the recent taping of the NAACP's Image Awards: A Journey Of Excellence ceremonies in Los Angeles. The singer's broad musicality and elegant, dignified demeanor have gained him numerous fans across musical genres.
Asked which artists stand at the forefront of soul for the last century, McKnight replied, "That is so difficult because we have so many different styles of music that we are at the forefront of. I grew up playing jazz. I mean, I'd have to say Miles Davis's--anything by Miles--would've been that, but probably Stevie Wonder's Innervisions would have to be the one. Every song is just sort of an ode to a part of his life and times, from the time when he was little up to that point. There's really no songs I skip past. I sort of gauge an album on how many songs I skip past, and I don't skip past any of those songs."
The NAACP Image Awards: A Journey Of Excellence, which recognizes outstanding work in film and television, is scheduled to air on Friday (March 9).
