Len Lets The 'Sunshine' In

(10/1/99, 1 a.m. PDT) - The sun appears to be shining on Toronto-based pop group Len. The band is currently enjoying the success of its hit single, "Steal My Sunshine," from its major-label debut album You Can't Stop The Bum Rush. On Sept. 23, the band picked up three awards at the Much Music Video Awards in Canada, including best video, best pop video, and best Canadian group. The best Canadian group award was a people's choice award voted on by fans. "Steal My Sunshine" first appeared on the Go soundtrack and has since become an anthem of sorts for the band. Len member Canada's Own Drunkness Monster explained to LAUNCH the trick to creating a major-label hit song: "'Sunshine' is a funny song because, first of all, it was done on eight-track, which I promised I wouldn't say because it's supposed to sound like a big recording. You're not supposed to tell people these things. But it really was done on just a piece of sh-t eight-track in my bedroom, and it was done after a big rave at six in the morning. We were all just f---ed on E, and the song just came out man." The Burger Pimp, born Marc Costanzo, added that the success of the track is a bit overwhelming for him. "I appreciate people buying it and all that, but I don't understand how one day you can be sitting in your bedroom making a song that you don't particularly love--and I don't hate it, but it's not my favorite song in the world--and the next thing you know it's all over the place." Currently, "Steal My Sunshine" is No. 18 on the Billboard Hot 100. Len will embark on its first U.S. tour beginning Oct. 7 in Chicago.
