Homer Simpson To Tackle Chumbawamba's 'Tubthumping'

(5/9/02, 7 a.m. ET) -- Simpsons character Homer Simpson will offer his interpretation of the Chumbawamba hit, "Tubthumping," on the next episode of the popular animated sitcom, airing Sunday (May 12) on the Fox network.
The character, played by Dan Castellaneta, will offer his own variation of the 1997 top 10 single, with the words: "I take a whiskey drink/I take a chocolate drink/and when I have to pee/I use the kitchen sink."
For Chumbawamba, the choice to grant permission comes after it has turned down numerous requests for use of the song, including those from South African rugby teams, a Norwegian organization that reenacts Viking battles, and an Irish recording artist who dresses in a turkey outfit, according to a band spokesperson. But the British group shares an affinity for Homer, saying that the song "could have been written precisely for [him]."
"We relate 'cause most people in the band are parents; we relate 'cause we've been there, blasted and peeing in the sink, or the wardrobe or the hallway fully believing it to be the toilet," says Chumbawamba's Danbert Nobacon. Maybe being able to laugh at ourselves--and take the proverbial piss out of ourselves--is part of what keeps Chumbawamba going."
Chumbawamba's next album, Readymades, arrives June 18 from Republic/Universal.
