Alice In Chains' Cantrell Signs With Roadrunner, 'Degradation Trip' Due In May

(1/15/02, 5 p.m. ET) -- Former Alice In Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell has joined Roadrunner Records, the upstart rock label with a roster that includes Nickelback, Slipknot, and Fear Factory. Cantrell has already completed an album titled Degradation Trip, which is set to arrive in stores May 14.
Cantrell co-produced the effort, which will feature 13 or 14 songs, with Jeff Tomei. The recording features Cantrell on guitar and vocals, and Ozzy Osbourne sidemen Mike Bordin on drums and Robert Trujillo on bass. Degradation Trip has been described as similar to the last Alice In Chains studio album, 1995's self-titled effort.
Degradation Trip is Cantrell's second solo album, following 1998's Boggy Depot. Cantrell explained to LAUNCH in an interview a few years back why he and his band Alice In Chains have kept a relatively low profile. During that period, rumors circulated that singer Layne Staley's drug addiction led to Alice In Chains' inactivity.
"I think the lifestyle as far as...in any form of entertainment business is pretty intense. I think it has a lot to do with being put in the spotlight, and having that much focus on you and at the same time in your personal life having such little part of yourself, really to deal with. It's like, so and so is a junkie or so and so's on this, or an alcoholic or in rehab... It's like, Jesus Christ, it's a hard f--kin' life to deal with. It really is. Like I said, I'm not crying about it. I put myself here, and I'm not making any excuses for it, but I see it around me all the time," he said.
Cantrell debuted a few of the new songs on a mini-tour last spring, which was shelved after he broke his arm shortly before the famed Atlanta Music Midtown festival in May. He did play his festival date in a cast.
