Pantera's Anselmo Feeling 'Down' About Hurt Back & The Road

(1/15/02, 1 p.m. ET) -- Phil Anselmo, vocalist for Pantera and Down, is battling an injured back that may prevent him from doing an extended tour. Anselmo recently completed his vocal tracks for the new album from his side project Down, and his bandmate in both bands, bassist Rex Brown, told LAUNCH that Anselmo needs to attend to his back. He said the band will tour, but the length of the tour depends on how Anselmo is feeling and if he'll have to undergo surgery.

"He's got a serious back problem he's got to deal with this year, and we've got Pantera as well," noted Brown, adding that he's concerned about his singer and the eventual surgery. "They can give you a chance of he might not make it out of there. It's f--ked. He might not be able to walk again, but he's walking now. So he's put it off, and off, and off, but after a while I mean it's...he'll be walking with a cane or he's got to take care of it. At this point the most we can probably tour is a month on, month off until he gets that thing either fixed or treated. We've taken him to three specialists and they've all said the same thing."

Down's sophomore album, Down: II, is due March 26, and tour dates are currently in the works. Meanwhile, at press time Anselmo hasn't decided what to do about his back problem. He's resting at home in New Orleans.
