Cake's 'Short Skirt/Long Jacket' Makes Its Statement

(7/9/01, 3 p.m. ET) -- Cake looks to be returning to action in strong fashion with its single, "Short Skirt/Long Jacket," the first single from the upcoming album, Comfort Eagle, due from Columbia Records July 24. The song now claims the Number 10 spot on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart, up three places from the previous week and 10 from its debut three weeks ago.
Upon casual examination, the song looks to be about one woman's fashion sense. But, in typical Cake fashion, there's much more working underneath. Frontman John McCrea tells LAUNCH, "It's fair to say that it's not about a particular person. It's about American prosperity and, like, hemlines on skirts and how they're related to the stock market. It's about prosperity."
Cake will follow the release of Comfort Eagle with a North American tour later this year.
