Kelis Won't Be Around For The Millennium

(12/29/99, 12 p.m. ET) - Alternative hip-hop/soul singer Kelis -- who released her debut album, Kaleidoscope, last week -- is blowing up with her breakthrough debut single, "Caught Out There (I Hate You So Much)."
Although the purple-and-pink-coifed Harlem native is wreaking havoc on her much-buzzed-about Hype Williams-directed video clip, she's actually trying to stay away from the hysteria during the New Year's celebration. During a recent interview with LAUNCH, Kelis talked about where she'll be on the big day. "I won't be here for that day. I tell you that. I just don't want to be around, not because I think anything's terrible is going to happen other than stupidity. I think all the chaos that people and society has created on their own, that's what the whole chaos is going to be about. I mean, the world is ending, but I don't think it's happening on Jan. 1. So, I think it's going to be a whole bunch of dumb stuff happening, and I don't want to be around for that."
