MC Ren Says N.W.A. Reunion Had To Happen
03/14/2000 5:00 PM, Yahoo! Music Craig Rosen
(3/14/00, 5 p.m. ET) - MC Ren has been the least visible of the rapping members of
N.W.A. since the group began to disband more than a decade ago. However, the Compton rapper now says it was only a matter of time before the group reunited.
Snoop Dogg is replacing the late
Eazy-E in the new N.W.A., which is rounded out by
Ice Cube,
Dr. Dre, and MC Ren; at this point, former member Yella is not a part of the group. N.W.A.'s success in the late 1980s sparked opportunities for other Southern California rappers, including
DJ Quik,
Above The Law, and others. MC Ren told LAUNCH that the N.W.A. reunion had to happen in order to help the West Coast return to prominence. "West Coast need it right now, man, you know what I'm saying, and Dre out there doing his thing," Ren said. "We need this, you know what I'm saying? And, like, it probably could last. We do a album, hold it down for like five years, five or six years, 'cause ain't nothing really coming on the West right now -- but Dre it seem like, and
Xzibit -- so this sh-t had to happen." The updated N.W.A. debuted with "Chin Check" on the
Next Friday soundtrack in late 1999, marking the first time in about a decade that Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, and MC Ren appeared on a song together. Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, and MC Ren performed for the first time in more than 10 years on Saturday (March 11) when they taped an episode of Farmclub.com; the performance also marked Snoop Dogg's first public appearance as a member of N.W.A. The show, which will also feature performances from Xzibit and
Nate Dogg, is scheduled to air on the USA Network on March 27 at 11 p.m. ET. The forthcoming N.W.A. album is expected by the end of the year. -- Soren Baker, Los Angeles
