Ministry's Fireworks Warning

(7/3/01, 4 p.m. ET) -- Ministry's Al Jourgensen and Paul Barker have a special Fourth Of July warning--fireworks should never be used indoors. Jourgensen and Barker told LAUNCH they learned that lesson the hard way, after a fireworks display gone wrong nearly burned their tour bus to the ground.
Jourgensen set the scene. "So I bought this thing that was like the size of a bazooka, and we lit it off in the back of the bus traveling down, I believe, Highway 35 in Texas," he recalled. "And the thing had an underwater fuse so you couldn't put it out unless you had a pair of scissors to cut before it, so we could not put this thing out, so it was going to go off no matter what we did. It was amazing. When it went off, everything it touched turned into multi-colored fires in the bus. It was like Napalm. It was going ping-ping, ping-ping, ping-ping-ping-ping. And everything it touched was like a purple fire, an orange fire, a this fire, that fire. And, oh, the smoke coming out of that thing was just incredible. We had to pull over and wait for the whole thing to fumigate out and put out all the fires"
The bus driver wasn't too keen on the incident, but the twist of the tale came when the police arrived on the scene. "He called the cops on us, and the cops who showed up just said [in Southern accent], 'Well that's the damnedest thing I ever seen. Look at all that smoke coming out of that bus.' He's like, 'Yeah throw 'em in jail.' And cop goes, 'Let 'em back on the bus...' He goes, '...What did you think this was? This is rock 'n' roll, not Mozart.' so even the cops were on our side."
