Nelly, Ashanti, Puddle Of Mudd, Eminem, Alan Jackson, Top Billboard Award Contenders

(12/02/02, 3 p.m. ET) - Nelly and Ashanti are the top contenders for the 2002 Billboard Music Awards, set to take place December 9 in Las Vegas, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. The ceremony will be broadcast by the Fox TV network at 8 p.m. ET/PT
With mentions in 10 categories, St. Louis rapper Nelly leads the pack of finalist with 10 nods; while contemporary R & B vocalist Ashanti is up for honors in seven categories on her own, plus two more as a guest artist, vying for a total of nine possible awards. The pair also recently led the list of nominees for the American Music Awards.
Other acts with multiple mentions include rockers Puddle Of Mudd who are finalists in five categories, and Eminem and Alan Jackson who are each finalists in four categories. Acts with three mentions include Creed, Nickelback, Ja Rule, Ludacris, Usher, and Garth Brooks.
The awards show will be hosted by comedian Cedric "The Entertainer" and will feature performances by Justin Timberlake, Faith Hill, Avril Lavigne, Creed, Nelly, and Puddle Of Mudd.
During the event, Cher will be presented with the annual artist achievement award, while Eurythmics singer Annie Lennox will receive the music industry publication's century award.
