Chrissie Hynde Says Jimi Hendrix Backed Up Image With Musical Firepower

(11/27/02, 7 a.m. ET) -- With the seeming concentration on style over substance in modern pop music, where would Jimi Hendrix fit in? Pretenders leader Chrissie Hynde told LAUNCH that the guitarist, who would have turned 60 years old Wednesday (November 27), had both style and substance, unlike today's stars.
"The thing I really like about rock is it's not really supposed to be about how you look. I mean, it is about how you look, and it's very important. I mean, Jimi Hendrix had an incredible image, and, and his image was something that, you know, no one could ever, ever forget, you know? But he never had to set his guitar on fire--that was just a gimmick, but we loved it. The point is, he was just one of the greatest singers, songwriters, and guitar players ever. So, you know, and the rest of it was just a bit of fun on the side. Now, there's that bit of fun on the side, but there's, that's all there is, you know? It's just like, 'Where's the, where's the beef,' you know?"
The Pretenders kick off a North American tour in Jacksonville, Florida, on January 25 in support of their new album, Loose Screw.
