Counting Crows Floored By Sheryl Crow

(6/13/02, 1 p.m ET) - That female backing voice you hear on "American Girls," the first single from Counting Crows' forthcoming Hard Candy album, is none other than Sheryl Crow. Crow is a longtime friend that the group recruited to perform on the song.
Frontman Adam Duritz tells LAUNCH that he had been unhappy about the way the tune was coming off in the Crows' live performances and that he and his bandmates felt it needed something extra: "I was ready to leave the song off the album, right until the end, to be honest with you, 'cause I knew it was a great song, but I just didn't think it was a good version," he said. "And I couldn't figure out what was wrong, and then [Interscope Records chief] Jimmy Iovine said, 'Why don't you ask Sheryl to sing the backgrounds? Sheryl could come in and do, like, a more casual version of it.' So I was like, 'Aw, that's a great idea.'"
Duritz adds that Crow's performance in the studio left the band thunderstruck at her abilities: "She came down to the studio, listened to the song a couple times, said, 'Oh, I got an idea,' sang a harmony note-perfect. Doubled it, note-perfect. Sang a harmony to her harmony, note-perfect. Doubled that note-perfect. Next section...took her about an hour, she did the whole song. Never seen anything like it in my life. Absolutely the best, most accomplished, and skillful background singer I've ever seen."
Hard Candy is due July 9.
Counting Crows begin a weeklong stint opening for the Who on June 29 at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Irvine, California.
