Gregg Allman Kicks Off Solo Tour

(12/27/01, 7 a.m. ET) -- The Allman Brothers Band may be busy recording a new studio album, its first since 1994's Where It All Begins--but singer-organist Gregg Allman is still invested in making his own music, too. So tonight (December 27) at the Johnny Mercer Theatre in Savannah, Georgia, he's kicking off a seven-city tour with Gregg Allman & Friends, his own band that features longtime cohorts such as bassist Tommy Miller, guitarist Mark McGhee, and drummer Billy Stewart, as well as a full horn section.
Allman tells LAUNCH, "Mostly we play the songs off my solo record, and the way I record is different than the Allman Brothers in that I take writings from other people--whereas in the Allman Brothers, if we don't write it, we ain't gonna play it. I just want to put out a real good record when I'm doing it on my own."
Allman says he hopes to record a new Gregg Allman Band album in the near future, but for now he's focused on the Allman Brothers Band effort. The Brothers recently wrapped initial sessions for the album at a studio in New York City which resulted in six songs.
