(12/21/01, 3 p.m. ET) -- Brooklyn-based rapper, actor, and community activist Mos Def (Dante Beze) is currently in negotiations to make his Broadway debut, in the play Topdog/Underdog. Mos Def is set to step in for Don Cheadle, who appeared in the production's initial off Broadway run opposite Tony Award-winning actor Jeffrey Wright. Mos Def and Wright will play the roles of two brothers named Booth and Lincoln. The play was praised by critics in its initial run.
Mos Def has an ongoing acting career. Earlier this year, Mos Def starred in MTV's Carmen: A Hip-Hopera, opposite Beyonce Knowles of Destiny's Child. In January, the rapper will star in the Marc Foster-directed film, Monster's Ball with Halle Berry, Billy Bob Thornton, and Sean "P. Diddy" Combs.
Mos Def will also appear in Showtime, starring Robert De Niro and Eddie Murphy, and Brown Sugar, a romantic comedy starring Taye Diggs and Sanaa Lathan, in 2002.
