Al Jarreau Enters Hospital For Emergency Back Surgery

(9/13/02, 10 a.m. ET) -- Five-time Grammy winner Al Jarreau was admitted to USC Medical Center in Los Angeles yesterday (September 12) for emergency surgery to relieve compression on his spinal cord.
The busy vocalist was in the middle of an extensive tour to promote the upcoming release of his GRP album All I Got, due Tuesday (September 17).
Jarreau, 62, entered the hospital at 5:30 a.m. PT. According to a label statement, his doctor stressed that the operation is fairly common and that Jarreau is expected to make a speedy and complete recovery.
However, Jarreau's U.S. and international tour plans will likely be rescheduled. He was set to headline the forthcoming Verizon Music Festival in New York (September 21), as well as in Washington D.C. in October and Tampa Bay in November, among other appearances.
