Evanescence scored a major upset by beating out 50 Cent for the Best New Artist Grammy Award. The group also won in the Best Hard Rock performance category for "Bring Me To Life" featuring Paul McCoy.

50 Cent, the year’s best-selling artist, surprised Evanescence when he walked onto the stage with the group when they beat him out for Best New Artist. Evanescence’s lead singer Amy Lee addressed 50 in her acceptance speech: "Thanks 50! In addition to 50 Cent, I'd like to thank first of all my record label, Wind-Up for finding us. Thank you to the fans because I know there's no way that modern rock would have put a chick and a piano on modern rock radio if it wasn't for the fans calling in over and over, so thank you guys."

Ex-Evanescence guitarist Ben Moody was asked if winning the Best New Artist Grammy with his former band was bittersweet. "Actually, honestly, no, I'm extremely happy," Moody said. "Everything's going really well and I was kind of, it's more just sweet. We both agreed that, you know, we were going in different directions, and I was the only one who felt comfortable just going off and doing other things."

Evanescence singer Amy Lee says that winning the Grammy closes the book on the original version of the band. "It's a definitely a new band and a new day and it is a new chapter," Lee said. "Hopefully a better one, and a happier one, and a healthier one for everyone."
