Beastie Boys, Candlebox, The Deftones, And The Police In News Bites

(2/17/99, 1 p.m. PST) - The Beastie Boys have postponed all of the remaining dates on their current Australia/ New Zealand tour due to "a familial health emergency," according to a statement released by the band's public relations representatives, Nasty Little Man.

According to the statement, the band is on the way back to the U.S. to "deal with the very private matter." Nasty Little Man offered no further explanation, noting that the "Beastie Boys request that the media respect the personal nature of this matter and refrain from such requests."

In other tour news, once-platinum-selling rock act Candlebox has experienced another personnel change. Bassist Bardi Martin has announced that he has left the band under "amicable" circumstances. "This was such a difficult decision to make," Martin, who has been with the band for its entire seven-year history, said in a statement. "Kevin [Martin] and Pete [Klett] really are my closest friends, and we've had some great times together, but there are other things I want to do with my life that I can't do while on the road." Those plans include spending more time with his family and going back to school to get a degree in history. Martin will be replaced on the band's upcoming two-month tour, which kicks off on Friday, with bassist Rob Redick, who just finished touring with Dig.

This is the second Candlebox defection in as many months. Drummer Dave Krusen left the band citing increased personal commitments (LAUNCH, 1/13) and has since been replaced by former Ugly Kid Joe drummer Shannon Larkin, at least on an interim basis.

Meanwhile, Candlebox's Maverick Recording Co. labelmates the Deftones didn't lose a member, they lost a truck containing all of its gear and instruments.

The band, which was on its final stop on tour with Black Sabbath, had its truck stolen from a Holiday Inn parking lot in Dearborn, Mich. on Sunday. The theft forced the band to cancel its opening performance on Sunday night, but Sabbath and Pantera, which is also on the bill, were able to lend the Deftones enough equipment to allow the band to perform on Monday night, the final show of the tour.

"Ozzy was great," the Deftones' Chino Moreno said in a statement. "He came into our dressing room Monday night and told us, 'Anything that I can do, just let me know.'"

Meanwhile, the Deftones are offering a reward for any information that leads to the recovery of the stolen items. Those with information can contact the band at deftones@maverickrc.com.

In yet more road news, the proposed tour with two-thirds of the Police (LAUNCH, 2/1) is off, as guitarist Andy Summers is reportedly suffering from a bone spur in his hand.

Features on Candlebox, Dig, Deftones, Black Sabbath, and Ozzy Osbourne are available now on LAUNCH.com.
