(9/21/00, 3 p.m ET) - Head Lemonhead Evan Dando will play his first gigs in more than four years next week in Los Angeles. The singer-songwriter will play a pair of solo acoustic shows, the first on September 29 at the club Largo, and the second on the following night at McCabe's Guitar Shop.

The appearances mark a resurfacing of sorts by the alt-rock former star. Dando gained fame and near-teen-idol status in the mid-'90s via Lemonheads' songs like "It's A Shame About Ray" and "Into Your Arms," as well as the group's punkish cover of the Simon & Garfunkel classic, "Mrs. Robinson." But substance abuse and erratic behavior helped squelch a career that seemed often of the verge of a major breakthrough. The Lemonheads' last album was 1996's Car Button Cloth, from Atlantic Records.According to a spokesperson, Dando's extended hiatus has been spent "finding himself," and "trying to figure out if he still wanted to play music." He is now sober, according the spokesperson, who also promises that "he's not walking off the stage in the middle of the set anymore."

Dando is currently unsigned but will be shopping new songs to labels in upcoming months.
