Sevendust's Witherspoon Feels 'Angel's Son' With Sugar Ray's McGrath

(12/1/00, 5 p.m. ET) - Sevendust vocalist Lajon Witherspoon has worked the song "Angel's Son," his contribution to the Strait Up tribute album to Snot's late lead singer Lynn Strait, into his own band's setlist in recent weeks. He is even set to perform the tune alongside Sugar Ray frontman and fellow Strait Up contributor Mark McGrath on the Tonight Show With Jay Leno tonight (December 1).
But Witherspoon tells LAUNCH that just because he's singing it regularly doesn't make it an easy song to perform. He says it catches him off guard every night.
"No matter where we're at, it's an incredible song, and I can't help but think about Lynn and him being gone because I feel like a lot of people take for granted being alive. He was a 28-year-old man that had so much to do, and now he's gone."
Witherspoon says the song's emotional impact is something he shares with fans as well, describing a performance just last week. "You know, I couldn't hold it together in the first verse of that song because there was a lady with her boyfriend or friend, but it was a group of people, and they were all crying. And it was so hard to sing the song because I could see that they understood exactly what was going on, and they felt that pain."
"Angel's Son" continues to turn heads this week, climbing to Number 34 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart while debuting at Number 39 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.
