Luke Eyes Next Level Of Hip-Hop Business

Craig Rosen

(4/11/00, 12 p.m. ET) - Luther Campbell, better known to rap aficionados as both Luke and Uncle Luke, made a name for himself in the mid 1980s by starting his own independent record company and releasing the raunchy raps of the 2 Live Crew. After watching like-minded artist-entrepreneurs make No Limit Records, Bad Boy Entertainment, Roc-A-Fella Records and Cash Money Records national powerhouses, the Miami pioneer is set on the next level of ownership in the music industry.

Luke told LAUNCH that rappers have to move beyond simply owning record companies. "It's time to now take it to another level because, you know, the record industry had to modify and do label deals and all that. Now people need to modify and go to the next level and say, 'Look, we want distribution deals. You know, we don't want label deals. Now you can distribute our product.' Enough of us ain't really doing that right now."

In related Campbell news, the mogul is also taking his business-and sexual content--to the big screen with Luke's Freak Fest 2000, his debut feature film. The flick centers on a three-day beach party on Miami's vibrant South Beach area. Campbell, who executive produced the movie, featured such artists as Big Punisher, Krayzie Bone, Goodie Mob, 95 South, and himself on the soundtrack. Luke's Freak Fest 2000 will be shown on BET's pay-per-view network in May. The soundtrack was released on March 14.
