(1/24/01, 7 a.m. ET) - The Earth, Wind & Fire catalog has been remastered, with two albums set for reissue in April. On April 13, 1974's Open Our Eyes and 1976's Spirit will hit store shelves, and both will also feature previously unavailable material.
In addition to the 11 songs on the original version of Open Our Eyes, producers have added the songs "Ain't No Harm To Moan," "Fair But So Uncool," "Step's Tune," and "Dreams" to the collection. As for Spirit, fans can expect to hear the original nine songs plus alternative mixes of "Saturday Nite," "Imagination," and "Departure," as well as the bonus tracks "Seraphim" and "African Symphony."
LAUNCH asked EWF lead singer Philip Bailey where the material for the reissues came from. "They would take different outtakes," he explained, "different vocal takes--from stuff that we didn't use, or different versions, and so those were the things that I really found kind of amusing. As well as the fact that the records--I did hear a difference in the mastering. It sounds a lot more transparent, more dimensional. You hear stuff that you never heard before."
Of hearing masters dating back a quarter century, Bailey told LAUNCH, "Several of 'em just really took me back. I was struck by the youth that you hear on the tape. Just, 'Wow, I was 21.'"
