Wallflowers Enlist Former Buckcherry Guitarist

(10/4/02, 1 p.m. ET) -- The Wallflowers have enlisted a guitarist best known for Sunset Strip-style hard rock for the band's new live lineup in support of its next record, Red Letter Days, due November 5 from Interscope. The single-named Yogi was most recently a member of Buckcherry, the former Los Angeles group who recalled Guns N' Roses, AC/DC, and the Black Crowes.
But don't expect Yogi to incorporate screaming lead guitar into the Wallflowers' sound. As frontman Jakob Dylan points out, "There's probably not a guitar solo on the record," and that will likely change little in the live setting.
Dylan tells LAUNCH, "You know, 99 percent of people who do it just don't do it well. We are essentially considered a guitar band but, you know, that kind of hedonistic kind of guitar playing came along in the '70s and I've just never been a fan of it really... that kind of arena rock...I mean, the whole gratuitous rock solo, I'd rather hear almost anything. It's kind of all about that guy for a second, he steps out of the music and does his own thing."
Dylan adds, "There certainly are some great [lead guitarists] that you can mention, but most people just don't do it very usefully."
Yogi assumes the role of former member Michael Ward, who left the group before the making of Red Letter Days.
The Wallflowers will hit the road in November. Dates are expected to be announced soon.
