(4/30/02, 5 p.m. ET) -- Train, Gorillaz, and Smash Mouth were among the big winners at the 2002 California Music Awards, announced Saturday (April 27) at ceremonies in at the Henry J. Kaiser Arena in Oakland.
Train proved the biggest winner, grabbing four awards overall, including outstanding album (Drops Of Jupiter), outstanding songwriter(s), and outstanding vocalist for Pat Monahan. The group also shared outstanding single honors for its "Drops Of Jupiter" with Gorillaz's "Clint Eastwood." The two songs came in at an even tie.
Train's Monahan tells LAUNCH that he's long felt the love from California fans, especially when the band returns home for a gig in San Francisco. "There's nothing like returning to the Bay Area and playing in front of the local fans," he says. "It's definitely going home, you know, that is always gonna be home, no matter where we live or anything. That's gonna be our homecoming, and it feels like it every time. We could play there five days in a row and it would be like, 'Man, this is the greatest day of my life.'"
For their part, Gorillaz also took home the honor of outstanding hip-hop album for their self-titled debut. While based in the U.K., the group boasts a California link in producer Dan "The Automator" Nakamura. Meanwhile, Smash Mouth was named outstanding group and its self-titled third release outstanding rock/pop album.
Other winners included Green Day for artist of the year, No Doubt's Gwen Stefani for outstanding female vocalist, and Alien Ant Farm for its major-label debut, Anthology, which was named outstanding hard rock/heavy metal album and outstanding debut album.
