Powerman 5000 Makes Roster Changes As Album Continues To Be Reworked

(11/1/01, 4 p.m. ET) -- In the wake of its latest album being delayed in the 11th hour, Powerman 5000 has received another setback--longtime members, bassist Dorian Heartsong and drummer Al Pahanish have left the group.
No reason was cited for the departure. In a posting on the group's official website (powerman5000.com), Powerman frontman Spider One commented, "This was 100 percent their decision, and in no way were (they) asked to leave. I can't really say why they made the choice that they did, that is something only they can tell you. As you know I have been in this band for 10-plus years with those guys and always thought they would be in it until the end, they will be greatly missed."
There is no further news on replacements at this time, according to a spokesperson at DreamWorks Records.
The shake-up also means that the delayed album, Anyone For Doomsday?, might ultimately be that much more different than the original incarnation that was pulled from the release schedule approximately two weeks before its planned August 28 street date. "I suspect that because of all this going down the new album will be even more different than I had planned," Spider writes. "New art, new title and many, many new songs. I realize this is a bit of a surprise to all of you, the only thing I can say is, Powerman 5000 will never be the same... it will be BETTER!!!! I guarantee it."
Spider tells LAUNCH that to continued metamorphosis of the album is all about making the best record possible. "It was one of those things where it's two weeks away from coming out and we just said, as a band, 'You know what? We want to work on it some more.' So, we put it on hold and we're gonna put it out when it's done," he says. "It's about doing it right and it's about doing the best record you can. It's not about rushing something out just to get a record on the shelf. You know, I think a lot of bands can learn from that, you know what I mean?"
The new album currently has no release date. "It's up to them," says the label spokesperson. "When (Spider) feels like it's ready."
