Aaliyah's Parents Settle Plane Crash Negligence Suit

(9/9/03, 6 p.m. ET) -- Diane and Michael Haughton, parents of late singer-actress Aaliyah, have reached an undisclosed settlement in a lawsuit alleging that negligence and recklessness caused the plane crash that killed their daughter. The lawsuit was filed against Blackhawk International Airways Corp., owners Skystream Inc. and Gilbert Chacon, and the company that chartered the plane, Atlantic Flight Group.

Aaliyah and eight others died in August 2001 when their twin-engine Cessna 402B crashed shortly after takeoff in the Bahamas, where they had been shooting a video for the song "Rock The Boat."

Investigators have reported the plane was also at least 700 pounds overweight and was also only certified to carry up to eight persons, including the pilot, and not the nine who were aboard, along with gear and various equipment.

Fans of Aaliyah honored the fallen star last month on August 25 with a prayer service and candlelight vigil at Ferncliff cemetery in Westchester County, New York. The event marked the second anniversary of the singer's death.

In addition, the singer's label, Blackground Records, released a new single, "Don't Know What To Tell Ya," to coincide with the anniversary. The song is the latest single from Aaliyah's posthumous release, I Care 4 U.
