(7/2/01, 1 p.m. ET) -- The first season of The Chris Isaak Show ends tonight (July 2) with a takeoff on the cable series Behind The Music. Everybody Loves Raymond's Brad Garrett, Frasier's Peri Gilpin, ER's Gloria Reuben, country singer Bryan White, and The Tonight Show With Jay Leno bandleader Kevin Eubanks guest as interviewees on the fictitious Behind The Music episode that has Chris (Chris Isaak) quaking in his boots because he's afraid the show will uncover a secret love child. His fears are prompted when a photographer who dumped him nine years earlier shows up with an 8-year-old daughter. After doing the math, his suspicions that he's a father are heightened when he notices that he has a lot in common with the young girl--they both love to surf, like old music, and they both hate broccoli.
The wacky premise of the season finale is indicative of the flavor Isaak intended for the show from the get-go. Isaak told LAUNCH at the beginning of this venture that he wanted the show to reflect the flavor of his favorite comedies. "My favorite shows would be, like, The Simpsons, The Honeymooners, I Love Lucy, Garry Shandling, Seinfeld. I think those are all things to aspire to. I think that the thing those things have in common for me was that I just laughed at them. They were all about being funny. The show that we're doing is, we're just all about hijinks and mirth. Somebody asked me if there's a lot of reality in it and I thought, 'No.' He said, 'What are you trying to teach people about rock and roll?' 'Not a darn thing.' I figure somebody comes home and watches TV, it should be entertaining," he said.
The Chris Isaak Show airs at 10 p.m. ET on Showtime.
