OutKast, Kelly Cruise on "Soul Train"

03/22/2004 6:00 PM, E! Online
Marcus Errico

Finally a good week for R. Kelly. Just days after Florida prosecutors dropped 12 counts of child pornographry, the R&B crooner/trouble magnet capped his weekend with a trophy at the Soul Train Music Awards Saturday.

Kelly picked up the prize for Best Male R&B/Soul Album for Chocolate Factory.

Aside from Kelly, the Soul Train delivered awards to this season's usual suspects: OutKast, Beyonc and Luther Vandross .

Fresh off three Grammys , including Album of the Year, in February and an NAACP Image Award last month, OutKast kept the winning streak alive by collecting two Soul Train Music Awards: Best R&B/Soul or Rap Album for the genre-smashing Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, and the Michael Jackson Award for Best Video for the Polaroid-shaking hit "Hey Ya!" (The Soul Train organizers decided to stick with the Jackson-named award despite his pending child-molestation case.)

Knowles, who won a record-tying five Grammys earlier this year, came into the night with a leading four Soul Train nominations. She won for Female R&B/Soul Album for Dangerously in Love.

Vandross, still not well enough following his 2003 stroke to attend award shows, captured the Soul Train Award for Best Male R&B/Soul Single for "Dance with My Father," the same tune that was named Song of the Year at the Grammys. Vandross has been getting some major props from the music biz in recent months, scoring four Grammys, four NAACP Image Awards and now the Soul Train trophy.

Other winners included, Chingy, who was named Best New Artist, and B2K, which despite breaking up late last year pulled in the prize for R&B/Soul Album by a Duo or Group for the band's swan-song disc Pandemonium.

Named after the still-chugging TV franchise, the Soul Train Awards honor the best in R&B, hip-hop, rap and gospel. Nominations and winners are based on a survey of radio programmers, talent managers and artists.

Saturday's ceremony, hosted by Alicia Keys and Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds and taped at Los Angeles' International Cultural Center for broadcast in syndication, included performances by OutKast, Knowles, Kelly, Erykah Badu , the Isley Brothers, Ruben Studdard, Nelly, Murphy Lee, Jermaine Dupree, Usher, Anthony Hamilton, Michell Williams and Janet Jackson , who avoided any repeat wardrobe malfunctions.

Here's the complete list of winners for the 18th annual Soul Train Music Awards:
