Maroon 5 kicks off its Honda Civic Tour Friday (March 11) with a show in Los Angeles. The outing is scheduled to pass through more than 35 cities, currently wrapping on May 11 in Phoenix. Phantom Planet, the Donnas or the Thrills will open the shows, depending on the city.
Spending a lot of time on the road is something that the members of Maroon 5 have grown very accustomed to. Keyboard player Jesse Carmichael said that four of the five guys in Maroon 5 have been friends for many years and share a lot of history together: "We started the band when we were all in ninth grade together. Four of us -- me, Adam, Ryan and Mickey -- went to the same high school in Los Angeles. We met in seventh grade and Ryan was two years older than us, so he was the 'big man on campus' drummer. We formed the band when we were in ninth grade and Ryan was in eleventh grade. Called ourselves Kara's Flowers. Played together all throughout high school. Spent most of our senior year in the studio. Our teachers were very supportive."
Maroon5 also partnered with Honda by helping to choose special custom features for the Honda Civic Hybrid and Honda Civic Coupe. Fans will get the chance to win the customized cars at the shows.
Maroon 5 will perform behind their debut album, Songs About Jane. The band plans to hit the studio after the completion of the tour to begin recording songs for their next studio album.
Frontman Adam Levine, Carmichael, bass player Mickey Madden and drummer Ryan Dusick of Maroon 5 spent the latter half of the '90s playing in the modern rock band, Kara's Flowers. In 1995, they renamed themselves Maroon 5 after guitarist James Valentine joined the group.
