There's nothing quite like an intimate party with a few thousand of your closest friends. This live, double-disc set, the third in an ongoing series of Matthews concert releases that began in 1997 with Live At Red Rocks 8.15.95, presents a mostly worthy if occasionally redundant one-night snapshot of the quintet, this time captured last September 11 at the Continental Airlines Arena in New Jersey.
While most of the cuts here have appeared elsewhere (indeed, the decision to end the set with Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower," also the closer for Red Rocks, will leave fans with a distinct sense of Dave-ja-vu), the disc's pop-on-worldbeat excursions and jazzy jams reflect a sense of spontaneity and vitality that often goes missing from the group's studio work. With the inclusion of three previously unreleased cuts (including "True Reflections," a one-offering written and sung by violinist Boyd Tinsley), it all adds up to a spin that's worth supporting.
