Singles And Beyond

Long the most absurdly ambitious member of indie-rock's beloved Elephant 6 collective, the Olivia Tremor Control is currently on sabbatical so that auteurs Bill Doss and William Cullen Hart can strike out with their own solo projects (must have been unfairly limiting working in a group that felt confined to a three-disc debut album!). To tide fans over until OTC comes back, if in fact it does, the boys are giving us this 20-song collection of assorted rarities, ranging from the early California Demise EP (very much of a piece musically and thematically with that brilliant debut, Dusk At Cubist Castle) to sketchier material, including live tracks from a '94 San Francisco appearance, a '96 Christmas song, and leftovers from a 600-copy cassette-only release on Drug Racer. (Best song title: "The Princess Turns The Key To Cubist Castle [Curtain Call Pt. 1 & 2].") Just how much you enjoy this disc will depend on how many drugs you've raced yourself, but there are some effervescent psychedeli-pop gems mixed in with the slightest of the four-track indulgences.
