Under The Influence

Alan Jackson's onstage show of support for George Jones at the recent CMA telecast was a good indication of how seriously the lanky superstar takes his honky-tonk roots. This terrific new album, a collection of covers of some of his favorite old songs, is another. Filled with fine renditions of such classics as Jim Ed Brown's "Pop a Top," Gene Watson's "Farewell Party," Don Williams's "It Must Be Love," Charley Pride's "Kiss An Angel Good Morning," Merle Haggard's "My Own Kind of Hat" and "The Way I Am," and Jones's own "Revenooer Man" and "Once You've Had The Best" (both of those written by Johnny Paycheck), Jackson subtly but convincingly connects some 40 years of country music without ever sounding either retro or nostalgic. Keep the faith, baby.
