What's A Man To Do?

What's a man to do, if he fronts a Latin band that hasn't quite been able to bend America to its will? If he's former Los Kumbia Kings singer Frankie Bautista, he goes solo, sings in English, and aims straight for the top of the pops. The first single, "Don't Wanna Try" -- an unabashed (and successful) heist from the Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis songbook--suggests the decision was a good one, but you can't judge how right Frankie was until you hear his whole debut. Well-scrubbed enough to be Justin Timberlake's Tejano big brother, but with the maturity to make his romantic woes and hip-hop dalliances sound reasonable, he delivers 11 potential hits without the help of any big-name producers or guests. And he timed What's A Man To Do? just right, as well: stylish, lightweight, and disposable, it should make a fine summer accessory.
