Supernatural

"Life," the first release from Des'ree's latest album Supernatural, is reminiscent of the vibe of her hugely successful "You Gotta Be," from her 1994 platinum album, I Ain't Movin'. It's light-hearted, its bounce is upbeat, and its messages on life are in-your-face, but it's not the album's best. To really catch the heartfelt South London native in the most favorable light, look for her sincere, soft ballads "Best Days," "I'm Kissing You," "Down By The River" and "Indigo Daisies," the latter featuring Des'ree delivering a Minnie Riperton-esque falsetto. Des'ree also brings balance to the album by tackling discrimination ("Proud To Be A Dread") and the simple pleasures of life ("Time"). Nearly all the songs begin with acoustic guitars that set the tone, before additional instruments, drums and pianos mostly, bring the songs their distinctive personalities. This incredible vocalist, who was most recently heard singing "Fire," the sizzling Pointer Sisters remake with Babyface that appears on this album, can surely set a romantic mood.
