The Wait Is Over

Outdoing their major bass hits "Whoot There It Is" and "Tootsee Roll" is a challenge too big for the Jacksonville, Florida's 69 Boyz, or any group for that matter. Their new album does include plenty of fast, pounding, rump-shaking bass beats guaranteed to keep partygoers on the dance floors, but songs like "Roll With It," "Sticky" and the potential hit "ICU" fail to deliver the group's trademark, irresistible, sing-a-long choruses. The best efforts are "Beep Beep" and the Doctor Dolittle soundtrack offering "Woof Woof." The group does mix up their flavor, however, blending in a bit of '80s dance, New Orleans-style trombones and even a few surprises. No one expected the princes of popular bass to make the mellower "Strip Club Love," "Freak You Down 2 Da Bass" or "Da Set." An ode to a strip dancer, a series of soul food metaphors for sex and a bass-less, ballad-sampled tune for the jeeps, respectively, all show the group's versatility, but are good album cuts at best. 69 Boyz may not resume their superstar bass status with The Wait Is Over, but a few good remixes could definitely make the difference.
