Nothing But A Dream

When the chips are down, no one can soothe the savage beast like Paul Kelly. Since the late '70s, the Australian singer-songwriter has a track record that's unparalleled when it comes to both quality and consistency. His latest--already certified "gold" in Australia--as well as a high-profile duet with Kasey Chambers, seems destined to make him a "star." Kelly not only has a master's touch when it comes to expressing those complex feelings that haunt us all on a daily basis ("If I Could Start Today Again") but, whether it's an acoustic tune ("Smoke Under The Bridge") or a full-band effort ("The Pretty Place"), he also has an ear for exquisite arrangements ("Change Your Mind"). Meanwhile, "Just About To Break" demonstrates that Kelly has no problem incorporating electronics. I don't know that this is Kelly's best batch of tunes--but even his second-best are miles above his peers. The disc also includes the four tracks from the excellent Roll On Summer EP. What a deal!
