Live At Red Rocks 8.15.95

We live in a strange time. A classic album has been dissected into a four-CD boxed set. A double-disc "BBC Sessions" album features multiple versions of multiple songs, and a band with only three albums under its belt releases a double-disc live album of an entire concert that took place prior to the recording of its third album. Such excess I accept from groundbreaking acts like the Beach Boys (The Pet Sounds Sessions) and Led Zeppelin, but the Dave Matthews Band? I should admit, I didn't give a damn about Matthews until I heard a seductive slice of moody pop called "Crash Into Me," and I have a hunch I'm not the only one. Given this history, I'm definitely not the consumer RCA had in mind when it put this album out at a special price to beat the bootleggers at there own game. As RCA notes, this is not to be considered the band's "official new album." And it's a good thing, too. The long and drawn-out performances may have worked in concert, but here, they're just a snore. To top it off, the album ends with possibly the most annoying cover of "All Along The Watchtower" ever recorded. For diehard fans only.
