The Tempe, Arizona trio of Gloritone--singer/ guitarist Tim Anthonise, drummer Dan Lancelot and bassist Nick Scropos--has the kind of flair for modern, rockin' melody that's sadly lacking in commercial alternative rock. As a three-piece, their rough-around-the-edges sound recalls great three-instrument-bands like X ("Cut My Heart," "Flying Kites"), Jane's Addiction ("Broken Arrows") and late-period Hüsker Dü ("Speed Of Sound"), with as much punky edge as the former and as much warm melody as the latter. Songs like the poignant "She Was A Good Thing" and the minor-key "Last Rites From The Coffee Table" search and find the spaces within the pop-rock trio dynamic pretty successfully, creating memorable, organic tunes with virtually no bells or whistles. Now if they could only find a way to mark their material with a smidgen more personality, we probably wouldn't confuse them with any other bands. How good is that?
