Anyone who thought Beck was nothing more than an aberrant hip-hopper would have their minds changed by this folk-oriented set, which Beck recorded for Olympia, Wash. label K Records, thanks to a provision in his Geffen contract that allows for indie releases. As Beck's solo performances also demonstrate, his knowledge of American roots runs deep.
