Kid Rock
11/11/2003 8:00 PM, Yahoo! Music Rob O'Connor
History is written by the winners, but you wouldn't know it judging by who's been authoring the real School Of Rock these days. Kid Rock and his bizarre amalgamation of horrible rock clichés could give future generations the wrong idea. You might start to think that someone actually wants a Styx reunion. Who wants to bring this stuff back? Over-sentimental country-rock posing, limp rapping, and turgid AOR classic rock are only where this young man gets started. He's just waiting to deliver a 10-minute version of "Freebird" with incessant calls to the audience to see, "How ya doin'?" If this guy were in sports, he'd convince fans rain delays were a good thing. Now, no one needs to cover Bad Company's "Feel Like Makin' Love" (can the Steve Miller Band's "Take The Money And Run" be far away?), but tracks such as "Rock n' Roll Pain Train," "Hillbilly Stomp" and "Single Father" try to explain the Kid artistically from the inside. And that's a place most of us would rather not visit. I'll wait to catch the Kid at a Six Flags near me.
