Live 2003

12/09/2003 5:00 PM, Yahoo! Music
Craig Rosen

This is one of several DVD/CD combo packs on the shelves this holiday season that'll make an ideal gift for diehard fans of the particular artist featured. While it might seem premature for these U.K. introspective rockers to offer a live set a mere two full-albums into their career, Coldplay should be applauded for at least including one new track and some B-sides, something that American rap-rockers Linkin Park failed to do on their similar live DVD/CD package. Like the Linkin Park package, the Coldplay DVD features five additional songs not on the audio CD. While the DVD/CD combo package certainly offers a good value for fans, this reviewer--unlike say Chris Martin's gal pal Gwyneth Paltrow--doesn't necessarily need to watch Martin and company perform live on his TV. Coldplay's music is top notch, but they're not the most charismatic performers. In fact, a colleague once compared them to four potatoes. Visuals aside, the CD portion of Live 2003 effectively captures the band's live show, building to a climax with the back-to-back-to-back performances of "Yellow," "Clocks," and "In My Place," before winding down with a somber reading of "Amsterdam." In addition, Martin's between song patter is charming--before "Yellow," he offers in his best Brit accent, "There's no excuse to be sat down on this song, please. If you stand up, we'll buy you all ice cream." Previous non-album tracks, the new "Moses" and the B-side "One I Love" echo of the Bunnymen, but that's not a bad thing. Only one question remains, when do we get our ice cream, Mr. Martin?
