Spoon And Rafter

You may not believe this, but Nick "Pink Moon" Drake wasn't always a superstar and musicians didn't always try to emulate him. This is a relatively new phenomenon and a most welcome one at that. After all, not everyone can grow up to be Korn. Mojave 3 leader Neil Halstead sings much like Drake, in a similarly muted tone with melodies that are also forlorn and instrumentation that attempts grandeur and beauty without getting heavy-handed. The nine-minute opener "Bluebird Of Happiness" breaks into two parts, while "Battle Of The Broken Hearts" segues perfectly into "Hard To Miss You," where Halstead sits at his new favorite instrument, the piano. The sound is essentially a continuation of 2000's Excuses For Travellers and Halstead's first solo album, 2002's supergreat Sleeping On Roads, where you can only imagine long expanses of quiet space and stars in the sky. Be smart though and wear bug repellent.
