Fever To Tell

Don't you love hearing that rock is back? And that New York City has once again played host? Newsflash: rock never went away and New York City has always been packed with bands playing every night of the week. But for convenience sake, we'll play along and pretend this is news and that rock has been "saved" yet again. Not to take anything away from this splendid full-length album by Yeah Yeah Yeahs. It is great fun. Karen O can channel Siouxsie Sioux, PJ Harvey, and Poly Styrene (the screaming nut from X-Ray Spex) at will and guitarist Nick Zinner and drummer Brian Chase both close the deal with ferocious aplomb. Tracks such as "Rich" and "Maps" bristle with a nightclub's energy and a record producer's finesse and the entire disc will wake up any drowsy partygoers in an instant. But there's been no shortage of this fine type of wreckage. It just used to come out exclusively on tiny little labels like this group's first EPs.
