Tone Soul Evolution
01/01/1997 3:00 AM, Yahoo! Music Dan Epstein
The leading light of the Elephant 6 pop mafia (a select society which includes the incestuous likes of Olivia Tremor Control, Neutral Milk Hotel and Secret Square), the Apples In Stereo blew a lot of minds with 1995's Fun Trick Noisemaker, which made it seem like any schmo with a four-track and a half-decent microphone could recreate Pet Sounds in his or her own bedroom. Of course, most folks with four-tracks can't even recreate fart sounds, and therein lies the band's charm. Instead of trying to impress you with self-consciously convoluted chord progressions, they make making perfect pop sound like the simplest thing in the world. From the joyful jangle of "Seems So" to the bubblelicious coda of, er, "Coda," Tone Soul Evolution is filled with effortlessly edible songs, most of 'em penned by singer/ guitarist/ label founder Robert Schneider, whom some have tagged as the Brian Wilson of the '90s. (The Tommy James of the '90s may be more like it.) Buy it, and add some technicolor to your black-and-white day.
