Journey To Anywhere
11/01/2000 5:03 PM, Yahoo! Music Ryan Crosby
After forming in a scene infamous for G thangs and dog pounds, this trio from Long Beach are swinging the pendulum back to the Golden Era of hip-hop. With the release of Journey To Anywhere, Ugly Duckling drops an album filled with Young EinsteinÆs party-moving beats and Andycat and Dizzy rhymes soaked in similes. These fellas live in a PG-rated world of cartoons, old video games, and everything æ80s, so donÆt be shocked to hear an interpolation of "Sweet Dreams" alongside Hong Kong Phooey on the title track. They are also quick to mock hip-hop braggadocio on tracks like "Pick-Up Lines," which uses all the lines thatÆll get the girls offended, and the radio-friendly "A Little Samba" where DizzyÆs claims "I drive a flying car" which are both met with reasonable doubt. DJ Einstein, the subject matter for "Eye On The Gold Chain," has some of the most skillful hands this side of DJ Premier. He coats each of their tracks with the funkiest samples around. DonÆt sleep. Go get this one before your next party.
