Maybe you're a Britney Spears fan. Perhaps N*Sync speaks to you. And maybe only another teen can understand and express what you're going through. Which is fine for the usual crises of young love. But where does the young fan turn when filled with hate and rage? What to do when going to Ozzy seems more and more like asking dad for advice? Kittie is your answer. These are four high-school chicks from Canada who enjoy spiked collars and studded belts, who are young mistresses of a tight, hardened brand of raging metal.
If the Donnas are this generation's ode to the Runaways and the Ramones, then Kittie leans a lot more towards White Zombie territory. Singer Morgan Lander is a powerful frontwoman, singing in a harsh roar often reminiscent of Wayne Static of Static-X--but listen to "Do You Think I'm A Whore" and you will hear the sound of deep, measured crooning. That's because in spite of the hardcore metal aesthetic, Kittie wisely allows a surprising tunefulness to occasionally emerge from all the roaring guitars. The otherwise hard-rocking "Charlotte" grinds passionately before suddenly slowing down with a fine understated bridge that comes out of nowhere, but shows just what a bunch of high-school girls are capable of.
