They'd be the first people to tell you that what they're doing is nothing new and that there are hundreds of other deserving bands also working this punk-minimalist blues schtick with tons of similar verve, but the White Stripes' black, red and white bullseye is the mainstream's official target and there's just no talkin' to these people, so why not just turn up the amp and let 'er rip? After the surprise success of White Blood Cells, Meg and Jack White come back even angrier, slimier, and more determined than ever before to "tests the bounds of reality" and see where--with all the enforced limitations of a two-piece--they can kidnap their listeners and leave them begging for mercy. "Girl, You Have No Faith in Medicine" and "You've Got Her In Your Pocket" huff and puff with salacious intent, while the carefully manicured writing of Burt Bacharach and Hal David are twisted raw as "I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself" turns to sawdust. It wouldn't be a surprise if by next album it were all one long uninterrupted primal scream.
