Payable On Death

Rob O'Connor

Still no cover of "Now Is The Time For Worship," but the evangelical wing of the hard rock nation cruises on with a sound that--its doomsday/salvation mode aside--still works up quite an existential sweat. "Change The World" and "Find My Way" may be looking for the promised land, but it's the love they find in all the wrong places that makes them an interesting dance invite. Most hard rock entities rely on the power of the riff and the static chaos of the militant beat, however, while P.O.D. certainly know Heaviness with the capital "H," they're not afraid to venture off into rhythmic schematics that recall a bizarre interpretation of jazz. They won't be turning to Primus art-rock anytime soon, but by using Chris Vrenna (Nine Inch Nails) to remix their first single "Will You," they are aligning themselves with an alternative nation that may just spring eternal. (The first million comes with a Sony Playstation CD, which also means something. I'm just not sure what. I'm waiting for the sign.)
