Chocolate Cake Review
07/13/2005 4:16 AM, AMG
In quite possibly the biggest blunder in the Crowded House saga, Capitol Records chose the novelty track "Chocolate Cake" to premiere the Woodface album in the U.S.. Predictably, the song was unable to find a home in any of the existing radio formats, especially in Modern Rock, where it was pushed most heavily. And not only did it fail as a single, but it also gave the wrong impression of the album, derailing its chances in the States, while it was met with both critical and commercial success in all other major markets around the world. Bad business decisions aside, the single does contain some real gems as B-sides -- the beautiful and often overlooked "As Sure As I Am," as well as the ultra-rare non-LP track "Anyone Can Tell." [The "Chocolate Cake" single was issued in the U.S. and throughout Europe with the same B-sides. In the U.K., a 12" single with the same tracks was also released.] ~ Chris Woodstra, All Music Guide
