My Love Life Review

The final Langer/Winstanley production and Mark Nevin songwriting collaboration also turned up another of Morrissey's odd vocal guest appearances: in this case, Pretenders lead figure and longtime Morrissey fan Chrissie Hynde. She's credited with additional harmonies, but it has to be said that it could almost sound like anybody, somewhat buried in the mix as it is. The song itself is a gentler ramble in comparison to things like the live "Sing Your Life," and though the lyrics are a bit curious (Morrissey asking for a ménage à trois?), the performance is a fine one all around. "I've Changed My Plea to Guilty" is another of his hug-the-spotlight numbers, his dramatic, emotional lyric accompanied only by piano and a bit of percussion. The U.K. and U.S. releases differ on the final track; in the States, his cover of Bradford's "Skin Storm," originally from the U.K.-only Pregnant for the Last Time, appears, while overseas, one of the At KROQ session cuts, which never was released outside the U.S., turns up instead. ~ Ned Raggett, All Music Guide
